Developed as part of the European JUSTNature project, these guidelines aim to inform and support garden owners, designers, and maintenance professionals in Merano on how to create and manage private green spaces in an environmentally friendly way. The document explains the importance of private gardens for urban biodiversity and climate resilience, given that 80% of Merano’s green spaces are privately owned. It introduces the “Natural Garden” concept, emphasizing gardening without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or peat, and highlights the benefits of native plants, diverse habitats, and water-saving techniques. The guidelines cover good practices for lawns, meadows, hedges, wild corners, water features, pollinator shelters, and green roofs, and include a scoring system for the “Natural Garden” certification. Annexes provide lists of recommended shrubs and trees for the local context. The overall goal is to empower citizens to contribute to a healthier, more sustainable urban environment.
